Succession Act of 2017



Be it enacted by the consent of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
  1. Line of Succession in the event of no direct heirs

    In the event the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess have no direct heirs, the Crown shall pass in the following order:

    1. The Crown shall pass to the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke.
    2. Should the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the eldest of their children.
    3. Should the eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child.
    4. Should the next eldest child be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke, provided there are further living children and they are at least 18 years of age.
    5. Should the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased and without any living or eligible children, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duke.
    6. Should the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the eldest of their children.
    7. Should the eldest child of the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child.
    8. Should the next eldest child be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duke, provided there are further living children and they are at least 18 years of age.
    9. Should the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duke be deceased and without any living or eligible children, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duke or their children, following Section 1, subsections E through I.
    10. Should there be no living heirs among the siblings of the Grand Duke and their children, the Crown shall pass in the following order:
      1. The Crown shall pass to the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess.
      2. Should the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the eldest of their children.
      3. Should the eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child.
      4. Should the next eldest child be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess, provided there are further living children and they are at least 18 years of age.
      5. Should the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased and without any living or eligible children, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess.
      6. Should the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the eldest of their children.
      7. Should the eldest child of the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child.
      8. Should the next eldest child be deceased, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest child of the eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess, provided there are further living children and they are at least 18 years of age.
      9. Should the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess be deceased and without any living or eligible children, the Crown shall pass to the next eldest sibling of the Grand Duchess or their children, following Section 1, subsection J, subsubsections (e.) through (i.).
    11. Should there be no living or eligible heirs among the siblings of the Grand Duke or Grand Duchess or their children, the Crown shall pass to the eldest cousin of the Grand Duke, following Section 1, subsections A through I.
    12. Should there be no living or eligible heirs among the siblings of the Grand Duke or Grand Duchess or their children, or among the cousins of the Grand Duke and their children, the Crown shall pass to the eldest cousin of the Grand Duchess, following Section 1, subsection J.

  2. Succession to the Crown not to depend on gender

    • In determining the success to the Crown, the gender of a person does not give that person, or that person’s descendants, precedence over any other person.


This act is enacted on this 2nd day of January, 2017.
